Jonesing for a Fix

As entrepreneurs, many of us are in heavy growth mode learning and absorbing vast amounts of information daily.

We may be learning how to build and maintain our websites, reading up on marketing best practices, refining our pitching and networking skills, and learning how to tame the beast that is social media. We may be doing all of this while juggling other jobs, families, kids and our health.

Starting and growing a business can be the ultimate personal development challenge as well. As much as we’re learning the basics of a P&L statement, we’re also battling some subconscious issues we may have around money, abundance and worth.

We may be dreaming big but quietly wondering if “big” is really achievable.

We know the importance of getting help and seeking out solutions. As entrepreneurs we’re a pretty resourceful lot. We read, we watch, we soak in every webinar and piece of advice we can get our hands on. We work on our business. We work on ourselves.

But when does all that “fixing” get in the way of moving forward?

When was the last time you were looking for the next “fix?”

Don’t get me wrong, getting help and guidance is tres importante and all of us could benefit from reading, researching, coaching, consulting, mentoring, webinars, healers, shamans, psychics you name it. But when we keep seeking more and more help and information at the expense of moving forward, there is something deeper at play.

Ask yourself:

  1. What major shift is on the horizon for my business? Does it feel huge and intimating?
  2. What am I really seeking from the counsel and advice of others? Am I hoping they will tell me what to do? Am I buying time by continue to ask people for their opinion?
  3. Is there something I’m clearly putting off right now? Or something I just don’t want to do. If I remain in “research” mode –  what is delayed?
  4. Do I feel like the next step in my business needs to be “perfect,” or do I have something right now I can get out the door as-is. Something I created that I can get feedback on, tweak, and make better?

Often the “Twin P’s” are creeping in: perfectionism and procrastination.

We may be scared that our website, product, service, or offering isn’t perfect, so we procrastinate in ways that appear like work when in fact we’re putting off the very next steps that will catapult us forward.

Yes, the unknown is scary and uncertain but you’ll never know what’s possible until you step into that beautiful field that is just on the other side of where you are now.

Now it’s your turn. Where in your business have you been jonesing for a fix when really you just need to go out – imperfections and all – and make it happen?
