The Uncomfort Zone of Being an Entrepreneur
Today I’m taking responsibility and putting myself out there.
Yesterday, I felt uncomfortable.
A prospective employer asked, “what do you want to do?”
I’m not a fan of that question–it’s like the kiss of death to a multi–passionate person like myself. (And it’s the reason I work for myself.) I told him, “probably design.”
“Probably?” He asked incredulously, eyebrows raised and eyes wide.
A little flustered, I replied “yes…probably. I have a variety of strong talents and I’d love to work with a company where I can use them all.”
I could tell he didn’t like my answer. I could tell he thought I was totally insane.
See, I was already late. I thought our interview was for 10:30AM. Not 10AM. We were also being kicked out of our reserved meeting room…the room he reserved to interview me. At 10AM.
Did I mention I felt really uncomfortable?
As humans, we’re hard-wired to seek out comfort. No one wakes up saying, “I’m ready to be uncomfortable today!!!” (Unless you’re Gary Vaynerchuk.)
But how do you expect to be a visionary entrepreneur if you’re not down with being uncomfortable?
You can’t. It’s impossible.
Dear entrepreneur, when was the last time you were uncomfortable? When was the last time you “put yourself out there?”
Your answer should be “everyday.”
By the time you’ve reached the zone of discomfort, you’ve got nothing lose and everything to fight for. Discomfort borders on an unbearable nausea. A cold sweat that chills you to the bone. A lump in your throat so heavy, you feel like your chest might collapse.
Couple that with your fears and you’ve got something good brewing. You’re on the right track.
Even if you’ve got a clear brand message, you’ll still be uncomfortable. That’s what it means to put yourself out there.
You can’t share your visionary message with the world if you’re afraid of discomfort. Discomfort builds character. You learn from discomfort. Take responsibility for your success and start putting yourself out there.
And if you haven’t taken your recommend–no, required–dose of discomfort for today, open wide and say “aaahhh.”
Trust me–it’ll suck, but it’ll be worth it.
