There will come a time in your entrepreneurial career when you will be in line at the bank staring longingly at those tellers in their Ross For Less business attire. (Oh I shop there too. I just never wear biz threads.) You’ll be wondering what the break room fridge looks like and if anyone cleans it out over the weekend. You’ll fantasize about union meetings. Well, benefits anyway.

All of your sexy dreams of being a business owner will have the appeal of a back alley dumpster. What about the hair blowing in the wind kind of freedom and the world is my oyster bravado? Oh those are now gum on the bottom of your shoe.

I know I sound like an unmotivational speaker. I’m not here to douse your dreams. I’m here to cut through the bullshit and tell you this day will show up. It might even be a week, a month, or longer. I’m telling you so you’re prepared. You’ll get to choose. Do I quit? Or do I reach down even deeper to muster the power I don’t think I have and keep going?

This is what sets us apart. This is the grit and guts of the entrepreneurial path. You are a different breed. Many people embark on this journey, not that many stick with it.

There is a Get Through It formula that unfortunately doesn’t come in a pill. It’s a no-nonsense mix straight from the school of hard knocks.

It’s different for each of us. Begin by answering these two questions to get your very own batch started. Then keep it stored at a cool temperature for that inevitable dark day.

1.) What’s your plan?

You know your business plan, marketing plan, the details, dates, and digits of what you’re up to? When you’re life is being rocked with emotional upheaval you need to get grounded.

Take off your socks and shoes, feel the earth under your feet and then take a look at your dreams on paper. You took the time to ground your once pie in the sky idea into the material world by writing it down. Go back review it. Make adjustments as necessary. After reviewing the big picture, look at your next step. Focus and laser in on the simplicity of only the next step.

Oh, and breathe.

2.) What’s your motivation?

I know it’s a bitch when you’re in the throws of being a hater to connect to anything other than your bed and curse words.

That’s why it’s important to get this formula prepared before the shit hits. Take the time now to brainstorm about what turns you on in your business. Why are you sacrificing corporate perks and a company car? What called you here in the first place?

The plan is your masculine, your form. The inspiration and motivation is your feminine, your flow. The union of masculine and feminine, form and flow is your sacred formula that your will be mainlining to stay in the game. And remember it is only a game after all, and the game isn’t over ’til you quit.
